Ask a professional cyclist where they spend the off-season and many will say Tenerife. The island's centrepiece is the climb to Mount Teide — depending on where you start, a continuous ascent of up to 40 km that tops out above 2,000 m. But you do not need pro legs to enjoy riding here.
For every level
- Beginners & families: the green, forested north around La Laguna and the Anaga hills has gentler loops and shaded lanes. E-bikes flatten the climbs.
- Improvers: ride the coast road and take on shorter sections of the Teide approach before turning back.
- Climbers: the full ascent from sea level is a bucket-list day. Start early, carry layers — the summit is cold even in summer — and watch the weather.
Teide Mountain Bike Tours runs guided e-bike and MTB rides from La Laguna with bikes, helmets and support included, so you can pick a route that matches your fitness.
Practical tips
- Hydrate and fuel more than you think; the dry air is deceptive.
- Layer up for descents — it can be 15-20 °C colder at altitude.
- Mornings are calmest; afternoon winds pick up on the exposed climbs.
- Always carry a spare tube and a light for tunnels.
