Renting a Car in Tenerife: A Practical Guide

By Tenerife BestJune 2, 20261 min read

Tenerife is the largest of the Canary Islands and the most varied — you can start the day on a black-sand beach, drive up through pine forest, and stand above the clouds on Mount Teide by lunch. To do that on your own schedule, you want a car.

Booking and pick-up

Rates are some of the cheapest in Europe, especially if you book ahead. Most companies — including Tenerife Premium Car Rental — will deliver to both airports (TFS in the south, TFN in the north) and to many hotels, which saves the shuttle queue. An EU licence is accepted directly; visitors from elsewhere should bring an International Driving Permit.

Driving the island

  • Drive on the right.
  • The TF-1 (south) and TF-5 (north) are free, fast motorways — use them to cover distance, then switch to the smaller roads for the views.
  • Mountain roads are well surfaced but narrow and winding; take your time and use the pull-offs to let faster locals past.
  • Fuel is noticeably cheaper than mainland Spain.

Parking

In towns, look for blue-zone street parking — pay at the meter and display the ticket (keep coins handy). Resort areas and big attractions usually have paid car parks. Never leave valuables visible.

A first road trip

A classic loop: up to Teide National Park via La Orotava, across the summit road, and down to the west coast for sunset. Browse every car-hire option and start planning.
